January 31st, 2007

Hoodia Gordonii The rising star in the weight loss supplement world is the plant called hoodia gordonii.  This cactus-like plant is native the Kalahari Desert in South Africa.  There is so much hype surrounding hoodia gordonii that sometimes the facts are obscured.  Here is some information about hoodia gordonii, such as does it really suppress the appetite, and will it cause weight loss?

African Bushmen of the Kalahari have reportedly eaten hoodia gordonii for hundreds of centuries without ill effects.  These Bushmen preferred communal dining, and used the plant to suppress their appetites for several days during long hunting trips.  Otherwise they would have consumed much of their prey during the trip itself.  Much of this anecdotal evidence needs to be confirmed by modern scientific studies.  Long term effects and side effects are of special interest.
