Understanding COBRA Health Insurance Cover
July 9th, 2007The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA) is federal government legislation which is designed to give protection to individuals who lose their health insurance as a result of the loss of their employment. A purely temporary measure, COBRA can assist people for a period of up to 18 months during what might well prove to be a difficult time.
As well as providing cover in the event of a loss of employment, COBRA also covers the loss of health insurance through a change in an employee’s employment status, such as a reduction in hours or a change in marital status.
While it is clear that COBRA is an especially valuable piece of legislation for the protection of employees it is, unfortunately, not without its drawbacks.
