Check Out What’s Making Waves in the Field of Constipation Research
July 21st, 2008New constipation therapies are making waves in the field of constipation research today. The three new promising constipation therapies include lubiprostone (type-2 chloride channel activator), Anorectal biofeedback and probiotics.
An Evaluation of New Constipation Therapies
Evidence of the efficacy of the three novel constipation therapies was evaluated in a symposium in concurrence with the Digestive Disease Week. The symposium concluded that all three constipation therapies are effective and have been proven to be safe.
The FDA approved Lubiprostone, the type-2 chloride channel activator proved to be an effective treatment for adult chronic idiopathic constipation. According to the constipation research, in comparison with placebo, lubiprostone greatly heightened the bowel movement of the participants in just four weeks.
Compared with the 31% efficacy rate of the placebo treated participants, lubiprostone proved to be more effective with its 61% efficacy rate of increasing bowel movements. It has also shown to be well tolerated with only diarrhea, headache and nausea as common side effects.
