This is a question asked by many problem drinkers who are desperate to put a plug in the jug but are put off by the ‘God’ or ‘Higher Power’ spiritual approach to Alcoholics Anonymous. The AA program tells you that when it comes to alcohol you are completely powerless, and therefore your solution is all about power, and how to find that power. Of course, the power they talk about comes from outside ourselves and not within, and so the focus is around a divine intervention which is there for that taking for all who reach out and ask the lord for help. Poppycock say some, a savior say others, but whatever your views, the bottom line is that AA has saved many alcoholics from a fate worse than death where no other method of recovery has worked. So yes, there are alternatives to AA, but their success rate is abysmal otherwise they’d be well known to problem drinkers.
