What Causes Ulcerative Colitis?
July 3rd, 2008Although there are speculations regarding the causes of ulcerative colitis, there is still no solid evidence to prove that it is caused by an infection. The actual reasons still remain unknown to mankind but experts suggest that abnormal activity of the immune system in the colon is responsible for the chronic inflammation and ulcers.
Ulcerative colitis is not contagious but the risk of developing an abnormal activation of the immune system can be blamed on genetic inheritance. Hence, first degree relatives of IBD patients comparatively face a greater risk of contracting such conditions. Children, brothers and sisters are thus more susceptible.
