Drug for Diabetes May Boost Cancer Vaccines
August 6th, 2009US researchers have discovered that a common diabetes drug can boost the function of the immune system’s ‘memory’ in mice.
The anti-diabetic drug metformin made an experimental vaccine work better by boosting numbers of cancer fighting T-cells, they discovered. Specialized T-cells and B-cells have immunological memory: they protect the body against diseases it has already encountered after a vaccination or infection.
Researchers at McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania were investigating how the body produces specialised white blood cells called ‘memory’ T-cells, which form an important part of the human immune system.
