Making The Right Food Choices With Diabetes

April 26th, 2010

Part of the difficulty with diets in general is determining which foods to eat and how much. This is one area where having a good sugar diabetes diet plan can be very helpful to you.

It can help to guide you towards making the right food choices. For example, whole grains are much better than refined grains in their ability to keep your blood sugar levels in balance and on an even keel. So, whenever possible, replace refined grain foods with whole grain foods.

In addition, a high fiber diet helps to slow down the digestion of carbohydrates in your stomach, which helps to even out their flow into your blood stream. So it’s a simple matter to replace the processed grains in your diet with whole grains. And by following the Diabetes Food Pyramid, you can make many more substitutions.

Proper Type Two Diabetes Diet Can Help Your Disease

March 30th, 2010

If you’re suffering from diabetes, what is the best way to go about treating the disease aside from, of course, seeking medication from your doctor? One way is diet.

The American Diabetes Association has developed a type two diabetes diet plan to help diabetics manage their disease. The foundation for this diet is the Diabetes Food Pyramid which is divided into 6 groups over 4 levels. This food pyramid differs from the USDA food pyramid in that it groups foods based on their carbohydrate and protein content, not on their food classification. As a diabetic, your meal plan is important.

It is the eating guide that helps you to maintain good blood glucose levels by establishing a routine for yourself. If you are able to stick to it, you will not only help to improve your diabetic symptoms but you’ll more than likely lose weight as well.

Diabetic Diet Guidelines

February 17th, 2010

If you suffer from diabetes, either your body is not producing enough insulin for it’s needs or it is unable to utilize the insulin that it does have. In either case, the result is that blood sugar builds up in your body, possibly to dangerous levels.

Diabetes, if not treated correctly can damage major organs in the body. A bad diet will hasten the damage done. On the other hand, following responsible diabetic diet guidelines has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and many other diseases.

This means that a good diet is a critical part of taking control of your diabetes. A good way to get started is to consult with a dietician, with experience in working with diabetics, and have her work with you to put together a food plan.

Atkins Snack Choices

February 17th, 2010

Sweet snacks are high in calories, full of empty carbohydrates and offer no nutritional value. But they sure are popular. There is actually a Snack Food Association that tracks sales of packaged snack foods. It is estimated that Americans eat 3.1 billion pounds of chocolate. Snacking has increased more than a third since 1988. Sales of snack foods gross over $30 billion a year.

If you’ve been a snack food junkie you’ve become used to eating carbohydrates of the worst kind. Snack foods are made from highly refined carbohydrates like white flour, white sugar, corn meal and corn syrup. They are high in trans-fats (which is a contributor to clogged arteries). All in all, they are probably one of the worst food choices you could be making.

But there is hope! You can conquer your love of snack foods by making Atkins-friendly snacking choices. Before you can make the switch, make sure to educate yourself. Understand just how dangerous trans fats can be by reading up on them. Then read the ingredients label of your favorite snack foods. You may be shocked to discover how many trans fats, artificial flavorings and preservatives that you are eating.

Next, get rid of all of the snack foods in your house. If its not there, then you can’t eat it. Junk food is not good for anyone in your home so ignore your family’s complaints and do what is best for the health of everyone.

Now you’ll need to replace those snack foods with some better choices. Giving up your snack foods is not the same as giving up snacks. Snacks should be a part of your daily eating plan because it will help you from becoming too hungry and indulging in high-carbohydrate treats.

Drug for Diabetes May Boost Cancer Vaccines

August 6th, 2009

US researchers have discovered that a common diabetes drug can boost the function of the immune system’s ‘memory’ in mice.

The anti-diabetic drug metformin made an experimental vaccine work better by boosting numbers of cancer fighting T-cells, they discovered. Specialized T-cells and B-cells have immunological memory: they protect the body against diseases it has already encountered after a vaccination or infection.

Researchers at McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania were investigating how the body produces specialised white blood cells called ‘memory’ T-cells, which form an important part of the human immune system.
