Poor Circulation In Feet

Poor circulation in feet and legs is something that my sister would bemoan about regularly even on the hottest summer night her feet were like ice blocks. As a sibling our family would tease here for wanting to wear socks to bed to keep her feet warm and if we were to take the kids to the park for walks after a short distance she would feel a dull ache in her calf muscle that would stop her in her tracks.

We all thought that she did not want to exercise and was using the cramp like pain she said that she was experiencing to get her out of a walk. These vague symptoms would come and go until at one doctor visit for something that was unrelated she mentioned her poor circulation.

After a barrage of tests it was revealed that she did have diabetes and was in fact suffering from peripheral vascular disease or PVD which came as a bit of a shock for the family for her having diabetes but more of a shock after we researched PVD as it is a complication for a diabetic which could result in amputation if better care is not given to the feet and legs.

As my sister had type 2 diabetes there was quiet a number of lifestyle changes that she could control that could help both with her type 2 diabetes and her PVD condition.

  • Lose weight
  • Exercise
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat a healthier diet
  • Daily inspection of her feet to look for any cracks or blisters. Apply moisturizer daily to keep soft
  • Shake her shoes out before placing them on her feet to remove debris and or stone.
  • Have shoes fitted
  • Not wear socks with tight band around the top

The scare it gave my sister by her doctor to find out she had Diabetes is the scare she needed to make some much needed changes to her lifestyle to turn her Diabetes around.

While Type 1 diabetes is not preventable at the current time, Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in both children and adults. In terms of preventing diabetes in children, the job is up to parents and caregivers.
