A Guide to Menopause and Insomnia

July 22nd, 2008

Women are almost predestined from birth to face difficulty either falling asleep easily or staying asleep as they age and enter that period in their life when they go through menopause. Not only do the hormonal changes experienced during menopause cause grave discomfort to many women, but the overall fatigue associated with menopause and accompanying insomnia can make the quality of their lives far less than optimal. Menopause symptoms may include insomnia, hot flashes, moodiness, aching joints, headaches, and a significant drop in libido. Thus, it is important that a woman going through these “life trials” consult her doctor concerning potential treatments she should take to reduce the symptoms and possible after-effects.

Menopausal symptoms obviously can make life extremely uncomfortable and women often complain most bitterly about the inability to sleep. Tossing and turning when one is exhausted is close to torturous when it is considered that there is immense stress and anxiety that is precipitated by the inability to sleep. A large portion of this stress, ironically and sadly, is produced by hormones that are released into the body as a function of the stress that results from insomnia.

Research indicates, in fact, that one in three menopausal women undergo considerable misery during the change in their lives to the extent that major medical investigations are ongoing in an effort to ameliorate the discomforts associated with insomnia and menopause. The results of these ongoing research efforts in conjunction with providing information to women appear to be helping with this very challenging frontier.

During menopause it is common for women to experience interruptions in sleep cycling because of a variety of factors that include night sweats, due to a drop in estrogen levels in the body. These episodes in which a woman can awake in the middle of the night drenched in sweat are obviously a major disruption to sleep. Further, because of the associated stress with these episodes, it can be difficult getting back to sleep once they have aroused.

Insomnia In Women - There’s Hope!

July 22nd, 2008

You toss. You turn. You can’t get comfortable. Mind races. Change your position again…and again. Even though your bed is comfortable, everything seems wrong because you’re so wired up. One thing you do know is…it’s not going to be easy to drift off. You’re in for a long wait before the sacrament of sleep.

And in the morning, you’ll feel awful, exhausted, drained, no-energy. Think menstruation, menopause, post-menopause. This is the battle of Insomnia and Women…it’s all part of the territory wherein female hormones dictate a lot about the way women sleep.

This Dear Lady is the demon known as insomnia, and it hits women twice as often as it does men since women have such dramatic fluctuations in types and levels of hormones dependant on the calendar in terms of time of the month and/or number of years.

But first things first. An inability to fall asleep easily or inability to stay asleep can come around once or twice a week, or maybe more often. Some women due to chronic pain such as fibromyalgia or arthritis, or due to mood disorders such as depression, stress or anxiety have insomnia every night of their lives. Here’s an irony: it’s self fulfilling and self-propelling. Got pain? It makes it difficult to sleep. Poor sleep? Exacerbates pain. Same thing with mood disorders. It’s depressing to think that when you can’t sleep well that your depression will get worse which makes it even more difficult to sleep. This is a run on sentences and a run of horrible luck. However, if you’re sleeping well now, just wait! If you’re a woman you in all likelihood will go through significant insomnia in your lifetime since experts say, virtually every woman will experience some degree of chronic sleeplessness.

This theory of using the water to remember the properties of the ailment and becoming a means of fighting the ailment has been the crux of homeopathic medicine since its inception in the late 18th century.

Eating Right for Constipation Relief

July 3rd, 2008

Keeping constipation at bay is similar to keeping a fit and healthy body. You have to work for it. Constipation relief comes only when there is enough roughage on your plate and you’re taking in food with enough water content to hydrate your body, your stomach, and your colon.
Try the following tips for faster and more effective constipation relief.
Load up on grains. Whole wheat products, oats, and rye among others are your best sources of fiber.
Get the green leafy. Remember your mama and how she used to force down those veggies down your throat.  Well, you may now have to force them down your throat if you know what constipation relief is good for you.
Go on dates. Before going to bed, soak some figs, raisins, and dates in water or fruit juice and eat them in the morning for a liberating constipation relief.
Drink up. Make sure you gulp down enough water daily. Some dieticians recommend at least 8 glasses. But if your diet is filled with meat and processed foods, you might have to double that one.
